Grain Mill Payback Calculator

Updated 2026-11-04

Grain mills are often sold on savings. This calculator shows whether that holds for your kitchen.

How to use the result

The calculation is simple: pounds of flour a year, times the price gap between what you buy now and wheat berries, set against the price of the mill. It leaves out electricity, shipping on bulk grain and storage containers, so real payback runs a little longer.

Price matters more than anything else here. Compare against the flour you actually buy, and use the berry price you would actually pay, including shipping. If berries cost as much per pound as your bagged flour, a mill will never pay for itself.

There are good reasons to mill that have nothing to do with money, such as flavor, freshness and access to grains you cannot buy as flour. Just be honest with yourself about which reason is yours. See is a grain mill worth it.
